Destination Branding & National Competitiveness: Lessons from an African Journey

A Chicago based colleague & I visited Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana some weeks ago. It was his first time in Sub-Saharan Africa.

While in Kenya, we had the option of flying directly from Nairobi to Kakamega but instead we chose to fly to Kisumu, on the Kenya-Uganda border and take a 2-3 hour cab ride to Kakamega. Since we planned to leave Kakamega that same day, it meant we would spend the night in Kisumu.

If I Were The President of Nigeria...

11-year-old Miss Babatope-Ojo Oluwatise is a Junior Secondary School 1 student of Chrisland College Idimu, Lagos, Nigeria. I have known 'Tise since 2008 when she was just 4 years. She has always been a lively, bubbly sweet young girl. A few days ago, she emailed me this article. She had written it in school. Please take a few minutes to read her 455 word essay. I have christened it #LetterFromTise.

Winning Against All Odds

The headlines have been messy:

“Anger at Uber as fares soar during Sydney cafe siege”; “California prosecutors sue Uber for misleading customers”; “Uber rival accuses car service of dirty tactics”; “Uber sorry for 'hot chick' 20-minute ride promo”; “Uber exec suggests digging up dirt on journalists”; “Uber's dirty tricks quantified: Rival counts 5,560 canceled rides”;

Loved Abroad, Hated at Home

The verdict is out on Super Bowl 49. What the Super Bowl is to American Football is what the final match of the World Cup is to Football. On the field, the New England Patriots dethroned 2014 champions, the Seattle Seahawks. Off the field, advertisers went to war over the world’s most expensive advert slots per second.

Time to Rethink Military’s Information Management Approach

“When war is declared, truth is the first casualty” ~ Anon

I have always wanted to be in the military. From my primary school days I had started reading about the exploits of Generals Eisenhower & Patton and Field Marshal Rommel. My best movie then was the “The Longest Day”, an epic war movie about the D-Day battle of Normandy in World War 2. Featuring the likes of John Wayne, Sean Connery and Richard Burton, it gave me a glimpse of the heroism that has defined the military for generations. Together with my friends we nicknamed our school, homes and some landmarks in our town after key structures of the Allied forces.

The Gazelle or a Lion

“With each new day in Africa, a gazelle wakes up knowing that he must outrun the fastest lion or perish. At the same time, a lion stirs and stretches, knowing that he must outrun the fastest gazelle or starve. It is no different for countries. Whether Nigeria considers itself a gazelle or a lion, Nigeria simply has to run faster than other nations to survive “.
